You’ve Graduated, Now What?

Alright, so you’ve received your diploma now what? These exact thoughts were running through my head just under a year ago and still are. Despite what anyone says, it’s okay to not know what to do next. You might not know what to do for a few weeks after graduating, maybe a few months or even a year. Everyone who was standing beside you on the day of graduation is probably all thinking the same thing.

Maybe you have always wanted to travel to Europe and site see, or maybe you want to visit some family that you haven’t seen in a while. According to Thought Catalogue,  there are 10 reasons why every University student should travel after school. What better time to go and travel the world than now?

Or who knows, maybe you are like me and just aren’t done going to school and learning yet, which is why I enrolled in the post-graduate Public Relations program. I was so used to the routine of waking up, going to school, coming home and doing homework that I was afraid to change that. But here I am, with less than 6 days left of school and I will be graduating once again.

Whatever the reason may be, you want to remember to stop and take a breath, remember that you are allowed to take time for yourself and to remember that you are not alone. As cliche as it may sound, you want to make sure that you enjoy the little things in life. My advice to you is to take some time and find a hobby. Find something you are really passionate about or try something new. Hobbies are a great way to clear your mind, ignite creativity and discover new opportunities.

If you are reading this and thinking to yourself “I have these exact feelings”, then I suggest that you read this article. “I Just Graduated… Now What?” Writer, Katherine Schwarzenegger offers some great advice to millennials who have recently graduated.

It is such a scary feeling… I was thinking “6 years.. it is so much time”. When I graduated I was lost, I was not ready for real life. And now I think I should have been planned everything beforehand…

  2. I know that many students actually take a gap year just to travel and to find themselves. Personally, I get used to the routine and it is sometimes hard for me to start doing something new.
Thanks for the link to the “I Just Graduated… Now What?” article. I find it very helpful.

  3. great blog and super relevant because hopefully we will all be graduating shortly! will have to refer back to this post.

  4. So helpful Rachel… some words that I’ve totally been thinking… but it’s nice to be reinforced.
I think it’s important for us to remember that it’s not the end of the world if we don’t walk off the stage at graduation and directly into a job. Thanks for the great words Rachel!

This blog is the most relevant thing I’ve ever read. I keep signing up for new programs because I don’t know what to do after I graduate! I’m definitely going to take up travelling if I can’t get a job right out of graduation.

What you have written was so true for me after I graduated from the university. After I started to work, however, I realized that it was not as bad as I thought. But as a person who came back to the school again after 5 years, I feel in the same way I felt before. I am asking to myself nowadays, now what? But I have patience now, I will see what happens:) Thanks for sharing this and made me think.

I totally agree with you! I had graduated journalism and wasn’t sure what to do. It can be tough for graduating students if they don’t have a job lined up. These tips are definitely useful 🙂 Great writing!
